The devastation on Messi’s face after Argentina’s draw with Iceland
Messi miscues at the World Cup, where he cannot afford to
Argentina captain Lionel Messi has shouldered the blame for his side’s 1-1 draw against Iceland, which is being considered as two points dropped.
The Barcelona ace missed a penalty with a feeble attempt just after the hour mark.
“I feel responsible for the draw,” he confessed.
“We wanted to start by winning because that would have calmed us.
“The idea is the same, we have to win the next two games.
“We deserved more.”
The Albiceleste never got going and were frustrated by Iceland’s deep defensive set-up, with Sergio Aguero’s opener being cancelled out by Alfred Finnbogason.
“We didn’t find the space in between the lines,” he explained.
“In the second half Iceland played differently, they were waiting.”
Messi insisted that there is still time for Jorge Sampaoli’s side to make things right, starting against Croatia on Thursday evening.
“There are two games left, Croatia vs Nigeria is yet to be played, this has just begun and it’s long,” Messi reflected.
“We wanted the three points because they would make us calm but we have to keep going.
“Croatia will be just as difficult, given the kind of national team they are.
“They’re tight at the back and with one move they can change the game.”
After that tie, it could go down to a decisive fixture against Nigeria in the final group game with qualification for the knockout stages at stake.
